Abstract

The objectives of this study were to (1) describe the structure of Kompas daily news texts about the profiteering of the names of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla, (2) to explain the mental consciousness of journalists forming daily Kompas texts about profiteering the names of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla, and (3) to explain the social context influencing the formation of Kompas daily texts about the profiteering of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla. The method used in this research was qualitative research method. The data used in this research was news texts from Kompas daily newspaper, which reported about the case of profiteering of the name of Indonesian President and Vice President. Data collection method employed was literature study. The data in was analyzed with the orientation of analytic descriptive method. The results of data analysis showed that at the level of macro structure, superstructure, and micro structure, the global meaning of discourse developed in the news is about the settlement of cases of profiteering of the President and Vice President. The act of profiteering on the name of Indonesian President and Vice President was judged only to delegitimize the authority of the President and Vice President and state institutions. Meanwhile, the journalist's mental awareness that formed the Kompas daily news texts includes role schemes and event schemes. While the social context that influenced the formation of the discourse of naming consists of power and access. The ideology reflected in Kompas daily news texts is Pancasila.

Abstract

This paper discusses the study of semiotics on the meaning of the sign of Pasola show in Waihura Village Wanokaka District, West Sumba Regency. This study aims at describing how the meaning and form of the sign in the implementation of Pasola show in Wanokaka community. This study was conducted on the basis of Pierce's semiotics theory in Aart (1993). The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The data was obtained from the speech of the performers of Pasola called Rato. Method and technique of data collection were observation and interview. Observation was used to obtain the data of the implementation process and the signs involved in the Pasola show, while the interview was used to obtain the spoken data used and the meaning in Pasola's references. From the results of data analysis it was found that in Pasola show there are twenty marks, such as mamoli (earring), nibbu (spear), profit (drum), katopu (machete), karera (bag), katala (gong), whung, koba (bowl), kalabi (shirt), rowa rara (red sash), rowa metung (black sash), laiku (rope), leli (ring), reba (place to eat), winu (betel nut), rato (Customary ruler), arera (betel nut), lagoru (dribble), rahi dara (horse control), regi (cloth), horse equipments, Pasola player, lado, hela, kadu watu, Rato position. The meaning of these signs is as a symbol of fertility for women, symbolizing splendor. Dragon symbolizes the entry of the holy month that all the restrictions must be followed, symbolizing the unity of society in running the life of society, symbolizing the majesty of a king, the moon gives a hint of the passage of Pasola, the symbol of life Wanokaka society.

Abstract

Mooi is one of the local languages ​​in Papua. Mooi language ​​belongs to the Non-Austronesian language group. This research discusses about Mooi language phonology, including Mooi language phonemes, their distribution and phonotactics. Mooi language has 26 segregated phonemes consisting of 18 consonants, 8 vocals (monophtong), and 4 diphthongs. The phonemes are:/p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /s/, /f/, /g/, /S/, /h/, /k/, /l/, /r/, /m/, /n/, /G/, / ñ /, /y/, /w/, /a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/, /|/, / O /, and /|/.

Abstract

In recent years, it is found that pronoun they and its lemmas are used to refer to singular person to show that the person does not wish to be identified as one of gender binaries. This phenomenon occurs in The Washington Post having added singular they to their stylebook. Therefore this paper aims at elaborating how pronouns they, them, their, theirs, and themselves are used as singular ones in the articles of The Washington Post published in 2016. With the aid of corpus instrument software, this study qualitatively analyses a small corpus consisting of 100 articles. References of pronouns identified as singular are proceeded as the data source of this study and categorized into Crystal’s (2003) main classes of noun and Cobuild’s (2011) classification of indefinite pronoun. The study reveals that The Washington Post used they as singular with the references of proper noun which consists of names of people and organizations, common count concrete noun which consists of nouns denoting persons and a noun denoting things, common count abstract noun consisting of nouns denoting abstract entities, and 6 indefinite pronouns which are used to refer to persons. These references are found mostly to be non-referential, where gender is indefinite. However, some are found to be referential which are common count concrete noun child and proper nouns in the form of names of people. These references refer to individuals who identify themselves not in one of gender binaries, instead they are found to be used in a context regarding LGBT.

Abstract

It is believed that traditional grammar is no longer appropriate to teach students especially in developing their writing skill. Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) which focuses on meaning and function behind language is now seen to be well-implemented. The study tried to analyse student’s piece of writing on one type of text in which Hotel Industry students as the sample of the study should master known as recount text. Purposive type of sampling was chosen since there was only one text analysed which was seen as the most problematic one. Content analysis as the implementation of qualitative research was chosen as the design of the study. The findings showed that the major problem student encountered mostly on grammatical structures in which there were found some errors on it. Regarding the three metafunctions, it was known that the students had been able to accomplish all criteria of recount text, such as using mostly material processes which deals with ideational metafunction, using correct tense and subject to fulfil the mood exists in interpersonal metafunction, and using reiteration and zigzag pattern as representation of textual metafunction. However, since there was problem to overcome, a strategy was proposed known as “POWER” which stands for Plan, Organise, Write, Edit, and Revise, which is hoped to help students developed a well-constructed text fulfilling all sine qua non attributes that recount text has.

Abstract

As a demand of English learning, eighth grade students need to be able to write a recount text about their personal experiences. For this reason, this study employs a qualitative case study research design to analyse students’ writing of recount text. The data were obtained by collecting students’ writing in two different classes of eight grade junior high school in Bandung, Indonesia during the even semester of academic year 2016/2017. The self-composed recount texts were selected based on different proficiency levels as suggested by the English teacher of the school. For the framework of the text analysis, this study draws on Systemic Functional Linguistic theory, and recount text. Meanwhile, content analysis was employed to explore the analysis of the writing. The results presented that majority of problems on the students’ writings consist of social function and language feature. In terms of language features, there were still several errors in spelling, punctuation and capitalization. In term of Interpersonal metafunction, errors usually occurred in the Finite as there was an overlap of past tense and present tense. As a result, it was found that most of the clauses were written in material process and it still lack of reference in the theme-rheme structure.

Abstract

This research investigates both inside and outside of classroom activities to reveal the influence of English extracurricular in improving students’ English speaking ability in tertiary level. It is a response toward imbalance English speaking ability among students in English speaking classes reflected by their learning achievement. Students who belong to English extracurricular are indicated to have more significant progress to their English speaking ability compare to others who do not. Therefore, an attempt to explore further this phenomenon is necessary to do. The object of this research is all conversation classes for students from batch 2015 on academic year 2016/2017 at English department of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia, in which some of them are the members of Teknokrat English Club as one of extracurricular activities in that university. In accordance, the researchers apply both qualitative and quantitative method in processing all data to gain comprehensive result of investigation. The data are gained by doing field observation and students’ learning achievement evaluation. While the objectives of this research are (a) assisting to solve problem and find out alternative to improve students’ ability communicating in English and (b) providing knowledge about the role of English extracurricular in supporting students to achieve the competence of English speaking ability in conversation class.

Abstract

This research aims at knowing: (1) the realization of politeness of verbal and non-verbal directive speech acts of students, (2) deviations on politeness principles of students’ directive speech acts, and (3) the determining factors to the politeness and non-politeness of verbal and non-verbal directive speech acts for the Tenth Grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Mataram in the process of learning in the classroom. Research subjects in this study were the teachers who taught Indonesian, English, Economics, History, Mathematics, Religion, Civics, and Natural Sciences (IPA), and all students who are in class X of IPS 2, IPA 1 and IPA 3 in SMA Negeri 1 Mataram. This research belongs to qualitative descriptive study. The data were collected using observation method. The results of this study showed that: (1) there is the emergence of speech acts of the verbal and non-verbal directive of the students in the learning process, such as directive speech acts of rebuking, commanding, banning, advising, asking, reminding, satirizing, suggesting, threatening, rebuking, and (2) there is deviation of the principle of politeness of directive speech acts that is deviation of principle of one maxim, two maxim, and deviation of three maxim, and (3) there are influencing factors for the politeness and non-politeness of verbal and non-verbal directive speech acts of students in the learning process , including linguistic and non-linguistic factors.

Abstract

Refusal is one of many speech acts investigated in pragmatics. We usually do it in our life to reject other person’s request. People from different culture usually employ different refusal strategies since every culture has various way in protecting their positive face and reducing the threat that occur because of refusal ((Brown & S. Levinson, 1987). This study has two objectives: 1) to find out kind of strategies are used by Javanese teacher in performing refusal; 2) to describe how Javanese teacher use refusal strategies regarding the status of the addressee. This study was a qualitative study. The data were collected using discourse completion task (DCT) to elicit compliment responses from 16 teachers in Airlangga Junior High School Balikpapan. The discourse completion task (DCT) encompasses a variety of situations that required the participants to refuse the requests directly at them. Moreover, the data were analyzed with the help of Bebe, et all. (1990) in (Boonkongsaen, 2013) indicators. We can inferred that most participants used difference of refusal strategies. However, most participants tended to use the indirect strategies. Finally, this study also showed that the participants were more likely to be polite in their way of refusing requests.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to describe the use of instruction-based instructional model, knowing what kind of error students find in writing descriptive text as well as to to improve students' self confidence in English, especially in descriptive writing writing skill. The sample of this research is class X students of SMK Triatma Jaya Dalung consisting of 25 students. The study was conducted in January and February 2018 from two research cycles. The first cycle for the pretest and the second cycle for posttes. The results of the study found that the application of Problem Based Instruction (PBI) based learning process can improve the writing of paragraphs of argument on Class X SMK Triatma Jaya Dalung. Application of learning with the PBI model can also increase student learning activities. The mistakes often made by the students of class X of SMK Triatma Jaya Dalung in writing descriptive text paragraphs among them in terms of creativity of topic development, in terms of organization that includes the structure of argumentation and in terms of vocabulary selection, language use, and mechanical aspects, the argumentation has several deficiency. Management of learning with the right PBI model can improve the skills of writing paragraphs of descriptive text of students of Class X SMK Triatma Jaya Dalung. First, the PBI model is more fun in learning to write descriptive text paragraphs. Secondly, the PBI model is more effective in writing descriptive text paragraphs because the problems that exist in reading are easier and inspire students in generating ideas.
